Basic info

Hardware and Software

A computer system comprises hardware and software. Hardware is the physical medium, i.e circuit boards, processors, keyboards, printers - in short, something that you are able to touch. Other pieces of hardware can be added, changed or removed to advance or improve your system. There is also the internal hardware which incorporates the parts of the system inside the computer you cannot see. Hardware such as CDs and DVDs are the physical discs which store software programmes that run on your computer.

Software is everything you cannot physically touch. Software is a collection of instructions and code installed into the computer, ie. the internet browser that is used to download information from the internet or the operating system the browser runs from, Microsoft Office etc.

There are two types of software:

  • System software
  • Application software

System software will allow your computer to function and controls background processes. Application software is what you use to complete your tasks like Outlook, Microsoft Office, Web browsers, firewalls, games, wizards etc. Software comes in a multitude of sizes and styles to perform an array of tasks.

Hardware

Computer hardware encompasses the physical interconnections and devices required to store and run the software. Software is responsible for managing an assortment of independent hardware components, working together in a complementary and harmonious way.

Understanding the difference between software and hardware and how they work is essential to keeping your computer in good working order, knowing when to upgrade and how to troubleshoot problems, whether hardware or software related, can be a difficult, even for the most computer minded individual.

Worcester,Worcestershire and West Midlands based D&D Networks D&D took over the management of our College network several months ago and have begun to make a tremendous impact on our physical infrastructure and daily working practices. Through a wealth of experience they have been able to pre-empt any possible issues and, where equipment required immediate upgrade, have lent us a replacement until we are able to find the money to purchase, in our case a core switch. They are currently with us one day per week for one technician, but there has frequently been two technicians onsite to ensure things are running well. As Dell partners they are able to get us very competitive quotes on a range of equipment and, due to the contacts they have in the industry, have introduced us to a host of suppliers who are just as helpful and knowledgeable. D&D's pricing structure is fantastic and since replacing our outgoing Systems Administrator with them the College has saved money equivalent to a member of staff.
